This is easily the most corrupted issue for Expats migrating to, or relocating a Filipino from, the Philippines.  With all due respect to bloggers and bar mates, I have never witnessed a ‘Immigration/Visa’ discussion among Expats in which correct information was disseminated.

There is no shortage of ‘Armchair Immigration Coaches’, so beware.

Complicating matters for those in the Butuan region, is that the Butuan Immigration office is staffed by individuals whose interpretation of Immigration requirements/payments fluctuates often-so be forewarned.

In addition, there are various entities who advertise Immigration/Visa assistance.  This industry is not regulated, though a new law was recently passed requiring those who offer Visa assistance to be registered with the National Immigration Service.  I doubt if it will ever be enforced here.

Further complicating matters is that the Immigration Office in Cebu is wrought with officials very willing to accept cash for expedited service.  Again, be forewarned.

All Expats have different experiences and particulars, so it is rare that your personal situation is going to be exactly like another’s, hence the plethora of misinformation.

You are basically left with 3 choices; try to accomplish the task yourself, retain the services of an agent, or hire an attorney to do the process for you.  All of the choices will require a great deal of patience, as all of the choices are wrought with a high level of frustration.  Be forewarned that if an attorney/agent quotes you a price for the entire process, it will not be acurate, as multiple trips to Cebu/Manila are likely.

We do have a relationship with an agent who the local Expats appreciate.  He is not well versed in the types of Visa’s, but he has solid relationships with Immigration employees in Butuan and Cebu.  He can also assist you in acquiring your necessary requirements, viz, medical stuff!
