Butuan Expats: February 20, 2009

Written by admin on November 13, 2009.

Greetings All!

Butuan is alive this week with numerous conventions, seminars and parades.  All events seem to be very well organized and attended.  The Balanghai Hotel is worth a visit this weekend, as many of the municipalities in the Caraga Region have information and craft booths.  Tomorrow a cooking demonstration by a reknowned chef will be held in the Balanghai Ballroom-Iron Chef Butuan-!  On Sunday a Culinary Arts competition occupies the ballroom.

One of the conventions was the Caraga region Tourism Council general assembly.  The topic related to ecotourism and global warming.  While the concept of globla warming is debatable, the emphasis of living in a more earth concious manner is certainly relevant.  The national government appears to be saying all the right things, and fortifying their intent with new laws guiding municipalities in their respective practices of dealing with solid waste and environmentally friendly directives.  Whether the laws have enforceable ‘teeth’ remains to be seen.

An interesting tidbit;it seems that the Philippines group involved with the effort to scale Mt. Everest has a new project in the works.  They intend to construct a Butuan Boat in Manila, for the purpose of retracing some of the trade routes of centuries past.  This has been a project of interest of many of the Expats living in Butuan, but we were not able to see it to fruition.  This effort seems to be well funded and organized.  The Butuanon Yahoo Group has more info, or email me.

www.butuanexpats.com is now hovering around #50 in search results for ‘Butuan/Butuan City’.  As the site moves toward the top 10, the interest picks up.  A Brit newbie showed up today to express his appreciation for the info on the site, as have others via email.  To those of us who have lived here for a few years-battle scarred old war horses-try to remember how tough it was to acquire information when you first arrived.  If you think this site is of value to newbie’s, please spread the word/forward the address/weekly news to your mailing list.  I certainly would appreciate your effort, and those of us who have businesses or stuff to sell would certainly appreciate your support also.  As an aside, I greatly appreciate communicating via email, but would ask you to please utilize the forum more.

Our Fave of the week is Margie’s Cafe.  It had been a while since Joy and I had stopped in, so we did last week.  A very urban, yet friendly spirit.  Appropriately priced and the food is very good.
